How to set up a box random by group
Overview
Random by group allows you to set one percentage per group, then fill each group with the products you want. When a buyer purchases the box, the system does two things: first, it rolls to see which group they land in based on your configured odds, then it randomly picks one item from within that group.
A few things to know before you start:
- Group odds you set never change as items are pulled — if you say Legendary is 5%, it stays 5% for every buyer.
- Default logic: The system first randomizes the winning group, then selects an item within that group. All items in the group have equal probability. Pulled items can appear again in future pulls.
Step by Step: Setting Up Your Group Random Box
Step 1: Create a new box and choose Group Random
Go to the Manage box page, click Create new Single box. When prompted to choose a randomization method, select "Random by group(s)".

Step 2: Create your groups
This is where you define how your box is structured. Think of each group as a rarity tier.
Click "+ Add tier" to add a new group, and fill in the following:
- Group name — Give it a clear, buyer-friendly name
- Chance (%) — Enter the probability that a buyer will land in this group.
- Colour (optional) — Pick a colour label to visually distinguish groups in your dashboard.
Repeat this for each tier you want. You can add as many groups as you need.
Important: The percentages across all groups must add up to exactly 100%. Mysbox shows a running total as you type, and will prevent you from publishing until the sum is exactly right.
Step 3: Add items to each group
Once your groups are created, you need to fill each one with products. Click "Browse" on a group to open the item selection modal. You have two ways to add items:
- Select specific products
Search for individual products from your Shopify inventory and check the ones you want. If a product has multiple variants, each variant appears as its own row so you can include exactly the ones you want. When you're done, click "Done" to add them to the group.
- Select a Shopify collection
If you have a large inventory, adding them one by one isn't practical. Instead, search for and select a Shopify collection. All in-stock variants in that collection will be imported into the group at once.

Step 4: Review and publish
Before you can publish, make sure that:
- All group percentages add up to exactly 100%
- Every group has at least one item in it
Then hit Save.

Once published, your product page will show buyers a breakdown of each group — the name, the percentage chance, and which items are in each group. You can customize this widget on Style setting page.
